Attention and Executive Functioning Tests (ADHD)

Assessment Process for ADHD in Adults

Our comprehensive ADHD assessment process includes multiple tools designed to provide a thorough evaluation of executive functioning, attention, and related cognitive functions. Below is an overview of the tests we utilize in the diagnostic process:

1. Diagnostic Interview for ADHD in Adults, 3rd edition (DIVA-5)

The DIVA-5 is a structured diagnostic interview designed specifically to assess ADHD symptoms in adults. It evaluates both current and childhood symptoms of ADHD, providing detailed insight into the client’s history, behaviours, and challenges. The interview includes questions about attention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity across various life domains (work, relationships, etc.).

  • Purpose: To gather a thorough history and provide a clinical diagnosis of ADHD in adults.
  • Structure: Typically conducted in a face-to-face interview, lasting around 1 hour.

2. Brown’s Executive Function/Attention (EF/A) Scales

The Brown Executive Function/Attention Scales is an assessment tool used to evaluate the broader aspects of executive functioning and attention. It screens for impairments that may be related to ADHD by measuring attention, working memory, emotional regulation, and other executive functions.

  • Purpose: To assess cognitive and executive functioning, focusing on attention and related impairments.
  • Age Range: 3 years to Adult
  • Structure: The test is typically administered in one session lasting 1-1.5 hours.

3. Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale, Fourth Edition (WAIS-IV) or Wechsler Individual Achievement Test (WIAT)

The WAIS-IV is one of the most widely used intelligence tests for adults, measuring various aspects of intelligence, including verbal comprehension, perceptual reasoning, working memory, and processing speed. The WIAT is often used to assess academic skills, such as reading, writing, and mathematics, to identify learning impairments that might overlap with ADHD symptoms.

  • Purpose: To assess intellectual functioning, cognitive abilities, and academic skills.
  • Age Range: WAIS-IV (16-90 years); WIAT (4-50 years)
  • Structure: Each test typically takes 1-2 hours, depending on the specific scales and subtests administered.

4. Conners Adult ADHD Rating Scales – Self-Report: Long Version (CAARS-S: L)

The CAARS-S: L is a self-report questionnaire used to assess the severity of ADHD symptoms in adults. It includes questions on inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity, as well as related impairments in daily functioning. This scale is often used as part of the diagnostic process to corroborate findings from other assessments.

  • Purpose: To assess ADHD symptom severity in adults from the self-reported perspective of the individual.
  • Structure: The long version of the questionnaire takes about 20-30 minutes to complete

Assessment Process Overview

  1. Initial Interview and Intake: The process begins with a detailed clinical interview to gather background information and identify ADHD-related symptoms and challenges. This includes using tools like the DIVA-5 to establish a diagnostic framework.
  2. Testing and Scales: The following tests are administered to assess executive functioning and cognitive abilities:
    1. Brown’s EF/A Scales for attention and executive function impairments.
    2. WAIS-IV or WIAT to assess intellectual abilities and academic functioning.
    3. CAARS-S: L as a self-report measure to gauge ADHD symptoms from the client’s perspective.
  3. Report and Feedback: After all assessments are complete, a report is generated detailing the results, and the findings are discussed with the client to provide feedback, clarification, and next steps
